There’s something pretty special about an intimate elopement in the Lake District. No huge guest list. No rushing from one part of the day to another. No spending the whole day worrying about whether everything is going exactly to plan.
Just the two of you, a beautiful part of the world, and the freedom to make the day completely your own. That was exactly the feeling behind Ailish and Jack’s Lake District elopement.
A simple Prep
The couple chose to stay near to Kendal and to just have a few images in their place for a few ice breaker photographs! They chose to keep things intimate, getting married at Kendal Town Hall before heading out into the Lakes with me for an adventure and some relaxed, natural portraits. And honestly, it was one of those days that reminded me exactly why I love photographing elopements here.
The weather was fantastic, the skies had just the right amount of drama and, everywhere we went, the Lake District seemed to provide another incredible backdrop.
An intimate wedding at Kendal Town Hall
Ailish and Jack began their wedding day at Kendal Town Hall, keeping the ceremony simple and personal. For couples planning an intimate Lake District elopement, I think there is something really appealing about this kind of approach. You don’t necessarily need your entire wedding day to take place in one venue or have everything planned down to the minute.
You can have the meaningful, official part of the day somewhere like Kendal, and then head out into the landscape afterwards. That gives you the best of both worlds. You get to actually get married, but you also get to turn the rest of the day into an adventure.
And that is exactly what Ailish and Jack did.
Taking their Lake District elopement into the landscape
Once the ceremony was finished, we were free to explore.
This is one of my favourite things about photographing Lake District elopements. Rather than simply finding one pretty spot, taking a handful of portraits and calling it a day, I love giving couples the opportunity to experience the landscape properly. The Lake District is such an incredible place for this because the scenery changes constantly. You can drive for a short while and suddenly find yourself surrounded by mountains, open valleys, lakes and completely different light.
With Ailish and Jack, I was able to use my knowledge of the area to guide the adventure and find places that worked with the weather, the light and, most importantly, what felt right for them. There was no need to force a rigid list of poses or spend hours standing in one place.
We explored, walked, stopped when something caught my eye and let the landscape become part of their photographs.
Moody skies and beautiful Lake District light
The weather couldn’t have been better for the kind of photographs I love to create. There was plenty of sunshine, but we also had those gorgeous moody skies that give the Lake District so much atmosphere.
If you’ve never experienced Lakeland weather, it can change incredibly quickly. One minute you’re standing in beautiful sunshine and the next the mountains disappear behind a dramatic bank of cloud. For me, that’s not something to work around It’s something to embrace.
That combination of light, cloud and landscape creates depth in photographs and gives them a feeling that you simply can’t recreate in a studio or by trying to manufacture a backdrop. Ailish and Jack were brilliant at embracing it all, and the result was a set of images that feel like a real reflection of their adventure together.
Why an intimate Lake District elopement can be so special
One of the things I love most about intimate elopements is the freedom they give you. Your wedding day doesn’t have to look like anybody else’s. If the two of you would rather spend your wedding day exploring somewhere beautiful than sitting through a huge reception, you can.
If you’d rather have your ceremony in town and then head into the mountains, you can. If you want to spend the afternoon walking, taking photographs, finding incredible views and simply enjoying being married, that can be your wedding day too. That’s the beauty of an intimate Lake District elopement.
It’s not really about making your wedding smaller, It’s about making it more you.
Planning your own intimate Lake District elopement?
If you’re dreaming of an intimate wedding in the Lake District, Ailish and Jack’s day is a great example of how much you can fit into a wedding without making it feel complicated.
A ceremony at Kendal Town Hall followed by an afternoon exploring the Lakes gave them the opportunity to have the meaningful wedding they wanted while still having a little adventure along the way.
And that’s really what I love about elopements here.
You can keep things intimate without making them feel small.
You can have a beautiful wedding and an adventure.
If you’re thinking about eloping in the Lake District and you’re not sure where to start, I’ve also put together my Lake District Elopement Planning Guide, which covers locations, planning and ideas for creating your own day.
And if you’d like someone who knows the Lakes, the light and the quieter places to explore with you, I’d love to hear what you’re planning.
Let’s go and make an adventure of it.
