Cragwood Wedding Photographer
Hi there! I’m Christopher Ian, a Cragwood wedding photographer and recommended supplier at Cragwood Country House on Windermere. With over 15 years of experience photographing weddings across the Lake District, I capture relaxed, natural images that tell the story of your day, from the gazebo ceremony to sunset on the lake shore.

about cragwood
Cragwood Country House sits right on the shore of Lake Windermere, and it’s one of my favourite Lake District venues to photograph a wedding at.
The light off the water in the late afternoon is something I plan every Cragwood wedding around, and the mix of grand interiors and quiet lakeside corners means there’s always somewhere new to shoot, even after photographing dozens of weddings here.
Whether you’re planning a full wedding day or a smaller, more intimate elopement, Cragwood gives you both the grandeur of a country house and the calm of the lake right outside the door.

I photograph full wedding days and smaller, intimate celebrations at Cragwood, and I know the grounds, the light and the best spots for your portraits. Take a look at real Cragwood weddings below, then get in touch to check your date.

Where is Cragwood Country House
Cragwood Country House is located on Ambleside Road, Ecclerigg, Windermere. It’s easily accessible by car or public transport. It is idyllically situated right on the shore of Lake Windermere. As a recommended Cragwood Wedding Photographer it is a real joy to visit the location and to tell couples stories at this unique and a stunning location.
One great aspect is that arriving on site there are plenty of parking spaces available on-site for you and your guests. There are also several accommodation options nearby for those who wish to stay overnight.

What makes Cragwood a great wedding venue?
What makes Cragwood a great wedding venue?
Cragwood is one of the few Lake District venues that sits right on the shore of Windermere, and that shapes every photograph I take here.
- The lake is part of your day. From the gazebo ceremony to portraits on the jetty, the water is always close by. The late afternoon light off Windermere is what I plan most Cragwood weddings around.
- A country house with real character. The traditional architecture and elegant interiors give me formal, timeless images for group shots and details, then a few steps outside you’re back to soft, natural garden and lakeside backdrops.
- Suited to smaller celebrations. Cragwood works especially well for intimate weddings and elopements, where the house and grounds feel like your own for the day.
- A team that knows weddings. Cragwood’s wedding team handle the details, which leaves you free to enjoy the day while I capture it.

What is the best time to get married at Cragwood Country House?
Cragwood is beautiful all year round. The best time depends on the feel you want:
- Spring: Mild weather and gardens coming into bloom, with fresh colour and foliage in your portraits.
- Summer:Â Long, bright days and warm evenings, with plenty of golden hour by the lake and views across Windermere.
- Autumn and winter:Â Deep oranges and browns in the fells beyond the lake, a more dramatic mood, and the chance of snow. The main room is a reliable indoor option if the weather turns.
Here are some beautiful photographs of weddings that took place at the gazebo at Cragwood Country House. You can see how beautiful and romantic it looks in different seasons and times of the day, one of the most stunning choices for either a wedding or elopement.
Ceremony Locations
The Gazebo
- The gazebo is the spot most couples choose, and for good reason, the lake sits right behind you through the ceremony. It photographs beautifully in soft morning light and again in the golden hour before sunset, so if you can, time your ceremony for one of those windows. It’s fully outdoors, so I always agree a rain plan with couples in advance.
Main Room
- The main room gives wide, elegant shots with the gardens and lake visible through the windows behind you. Because it’s indoors, it’s the safer choice for an autumn or winter wedding, and the natural light through those windows is strong enough that I rarely need additional lighting even on a grey day.
The Library
- The library is smaller and more intimate, ideal if you’re having a very small wedding or an elopement. The close quarters make for warmer, more candid shots, less about wide grandeur, more about the two of you.
Beautiful at any time of year, winter offers a more dramatic backdrop for the day, however Cragwood Country House always looks stunning during this time of year.
Best Wedding + Elopement Photography Locations
Cragwood Country House has many amazing photo locations for you to capture your special moments. Here are some of my favourites:
The Lake House and Jetty. This is where most of my favourite Cragwood photos come from. The jetty gives you a clean, uninterrupted view across Windermere, and it’s especially strong at sunset when the water picks up the colour of the sky. I usually build in 20 to 30 minutes here during golden hour for portraits.
The Gardens. The grounds give a softer, more natural backdrop, good for relaxed, candid couple shots away from the main event. They photograph well in most weather, which makes them a reliable fallback if the light by the lake isn’t cooperating.
The House Itself. The architecture and interiors give you a different mood entirely, more timeless and formal. I use these mainly for group shots and detail shots (the dress, the rings, the room dressing) where the surroundings do some of the work.
The Boat Tour. If you want something genuinely different from every other Cragwood wedding gallery, a short boat trip on the lake gives photos you won’t get standing on the shore. It’s optional and weather-dependent, but couples who do it tend to love the results.

The lake at windermere is a gorgeous and serene backdrop for your photos. You can both pose on the jetty, the bridge, or the gazebo, and get some stunning shots of the water and the sky. The lake looks especially beautiful at sunset, when the colours reflect on the surface.

Cragwood Wedding FAQs
Yes, the gazebo is the main outdoor ceremony spot, with lake views behind you. It’s fully open-air, so it’s worth having an indoor backup in case of rain.
The main room and the library both work as indoor ceremony spaces, and Cragwood’s team will help you switch quickly if needed. As your photographer, I always agree a rain plan with couples in advance so nobody’s scrambling on the day.
Cragwood suits smaller and mid-sized weddings best, and it’s also a popular choice for elopements and very small ceremonies. Check current capacity directly with the venue, as this can change.
Yes, Cragwood has rooms suitable for getting ready, which I’d recommend using so we’re not losing time travelling between locations on the morning of your wedding.
