There’s something incredibly special about intimate elopements, and Elizabeth and Alex’s wedding was no exception. With just a handful of loved ones by their side, they exchanged vows in the historic and romantic setting of Gretna Green. I love being a Gretna Green wedding photographer because it allows me to capture the magic of couples choosing to start their lives together in such a historic, romantic setting. The energy of spontaneous, intimate weddings and the stunning backdrop of Scotland’s countryside make every moment feel unique and special. The simplicity and purity of the day were nothing short of magical. It felt like a celebration stripped of anything extraneous—just them, their commitment, and the breathtaking surroundings.
Elope in Scotland Gretna Green
We began the day in Penrith, a quiet, charming country house tucked away in the rolling hills of the Lake District. The house itself felt like it belonged in a dream—a perfect blend of rustic elegance and quiet luxury. We would return here after the ceremony at Gretna Green registry office and also a short jaunt into the very heart of the Lake District itself for some intimate and natural portraits of the couple.

Wedding Photographer Penrith
I focused on capturing these quiet, in-between moments—small touches, soft glances, and the anticipation building in the air. With a fine art approach, I wanted to preserve these tender moments in soft, natural light. My goal was always to make the couple feel as if they were the sole focus of the world in that moment. I wanted them to be lost in each other, while the images themselves feel timeless and serene. During the morning prep I used natural light and created an atmosphere of anticipation but really wanted to capture that emotion in a fine art feel.
Here were a few examples of the prep:
Photographically, I approached their ceremony with a relaxed, documentary style, focusing on the candid moments—those fleeting glances, the way Alex’s hand gently brushed Elizabeth’s as they stood together, the soft flutter of Elizabeth’s dress in the breeze. There’s beauty in the unposed, in the moments that happen when people are simply being themselves.
From the formality of Gretna we headed to the Lake District on the way back to the house in Penrith for some intimate and beautiful portraits of the couple in the place they treasured most. These moments are what I aim to capture—natural, unforced, and full of emotion.
Here are just a few from their portrait session on the shores of the Lakes:
The light was soft, filtering through the trees as we took a few quiet moments alone for portraits. I worked with the light, the landscape, and their connection—allowing the couple to just be present, to let their personalities shine through. I didn’t want to give too many directions or make them feel anything other than at ease. I wanted the photos to feel like an extension of who they were, not staged or posed but simply reflective of their love story.
There’s something incredibly powerful about how the space around you can shape the feel of an image. With Elizabeth and Alex, I just let the dramatic surrounding set the tone.
Here are the images from the full day:
As the day wound down, there was a sense of peace that I could feel in the air. I knew these images would be ones that Elizabeth and Alex could look back on for years to come and feel transported back to that quiet, intimate day. Their close friend created a quirky and beautifully made cake as you can see, quite the surprise!
In the end, it was all about the moments—the way they looked at each other, the way they smiled when they realised they were officially married, the way they shared a quiet moment before heading back into the world. It was all about them, in the truest sense of the word. I wrote a guide on what to do if you wanted to have smaller wedding or elopement in the Lake District or anywhere, you can check that out here.
