When David and Ben asked me to be their wedding photographer, I hadn’t quite expected to find myself taking pictures halfway down a rocky path beneath Kidsty Pike. But their dreamy elopement epitomises everything I love about my job. It had raw emotion paired with sensational locations and dramatic scenery. I couldn’t get enough of it!
This beautiful couple chose to mark the start of their married lives by returning to the Lake District, a cherished place for both of them. I was really fired up when they revealed the elopement’s location, as this part of Cumbria offers some of Britain’s finest natural beauty.
The Haweswater Hotel played host to David and Ben’s momentous day and what a host it was. It’s a lovingly renovated Art Deco gem perched right on the lake at the heart of the Haweswater nature reserve, so it provided the perfect backdrop. Spending the whole day here meant that we could enjoy all the gorgeous details such as the intricate wooden bookcases and the vintage gramophone as well as the breathtaking views of the Haweswater Reservoir and the serene fells.
The Haweswater Hotel Wedding Venue
From the moment I started shooting David and Ben, as they prepared for their same-sex wedding ceremony, I felt touched by the joy and love in the room. It felt effortless to snap away as they shared precious moments amid the romantically grand bedrooms. This charged emotion stayed with them as they exchanged their vows in front of moist-eyed friends and family. Witnessing two souls intertwining their lives is a profound moment and the fact I get to document it always brings a smile to my face.
The next instalment of this enchanting day, led us into the wilderness for a portrait session. I felt more like an explorer than a photographer, surrounded by majestic mountains and dense forests. Capturing newlyweds alongside misty peaks and ancient hillsides created an electric synergy – it felt magical. It’s as if the rejuvenating natural habitat quietened our senses and allowed us to observe nature’s purest form. What must have felt like a sanctuary to the outside world was actually my playground!
Intimate Elopement in the The Lake District
It’s a reflection of David and Ben’s sense of adventure and passion for nature that we found ourselves hiking down a steep path, pausing at a lively waterfall. It’s a beauty spot they have visited on every one of their trips to the Lakes. So it was incredible to photograph David and Ben in one of their best loved places – backlit by penetrating light and the tuneful singing of onlooking wildlife.
Following our mini-adventure, we returned to the hotel for the candlelit reception. I always love this part of the day. It gives me the opportunity to mingle among the guests and take relaxed and natural shots while everyone is feeling laid-back and relishing the moment and recounting the events of the day.
David and Ben, you were a dream to work with. The epic location, the genuine love and adoration you have for each other – I wish we could do it all again!
