There are some wedding venues where the landscape feels like part of the day rather than simply a backdrop. New House Farm in Lorton is definitely one of them.
This summer I had the pleasure of photographing Jessica and Tomer’s wedding at New House Farm, tucked away in the beautiful Lorton Valley near Cockermouth. With the Lakeland Fells surrounding the farm, a historic setting, and that wonderfully relaxed Lake District atmosphere, it was a brilliant place for a summer wedding.
And, as is often the case with weddings in this part of the world, the scenery certainly did not disappoint. Working alongside the amazing talents of Pat Holt Films and the incredible MC and DJ duties of Simon Vogt really made capturing this day a total joy!
A Summer Wedding at New House Farm Lorton
New House Farm is a Grade II listed property dating back to 1650, set within fifteen acres of fields, woodland, streams and ponds. It sits between Lorton and Buttermere, surrounded by the sort of Lake District scenery that makes you want to stop what you’re doing and simply take it all in.
For a wedding photographer, it is a pretty special combination.
You have the character of the old farm buildings and original stonework, but then you step outside and suddenly you’re surrounded by open countryside and the Lakeland landscape. That contrast gives a wedding gallery plenty of variety without ever needing to travel far.
For anyone considering the venue, you can find out more about New House Farm Lorton on the venue’s own website.
A Beautiful Barn Ceremony at New House Farm Lorton
One of my favourite parts of Jessica and Tomer’s wedding at New House Farm was their ceremony in The Cart Shed.
There is something really special about getting married in a space like this. It has all the character you would hope for from a Lake District wedding venue, but the huge glazed end of the building brings the outside in, filling the room with natural light and giving you a beautiful view towards the gardens and the fells beyond.
On a summer’s day, it is an incredible setting for a wedding ceremony.
As Jessica and Tomer took their places and their guests settled in, the light coming through the glass created a lovely atmosphere inside the barn. It felt intimate and relaxed, but at the same time the surrounding Lorton Valley was very much part of the ceremony.
That is one of the things I really like about New House Farm Lorton. You never feel completely separated from the landscape. Even when you’re inside, the Lake District is right there around you.
The Cart Shed is described by New House Farm as a room specifically suited to wedding ceremonies and drinks receptions, with its fully glazed gable end looking south down the garden towards Buttermere and Haystacks. It also has its own bar and a large sandstone fireplace, giving the room plenty of character whatever the weather decides to do.
For a wedding photographer, that combination of beautiful architecture, natural light and landscape is pretty hard to beat.
Confetti, Lawn Games and a Few Quiet Moments
There was plenty going on outside at New House Farm, from the fun of the confetti throw to lawn games and everyone making the most of the summer afternoon. In between all the celebrations, we also managed to sneak away with Jessica and Tomer for a few quiet portraits in the surrounding woodland.
These little pockets of time are something I really enjoy on a wedding day — nothing overly posed or formal, just the two of them together for a few minutes while I capture things naturally. Then it was straight back to the lawn and the celebrations, with plenty more laughter, games and fun continuing around them.
Speeches in the Hayloft at New House Farm Lorton
After the ceremony, Jessica and Tomer’s celebrations continued in the beautiful Hayloft at New House Farm, a restored Lakeland barn full of character, with exposed stone walls, oak beams and plenty of atmosphere.
It was the perfect setting for the speeches, with everyone gathered together and plenty of laughter, a few emotional moments and some brilliant reactions from friends and family. As a photographer, these are some of my favourite moments to capture because the person giving the speech is only half the story — the real photographs are often found in the expressions and reactions happening around the room.
The Hayloft gave the speeches a wonderfully relaxed and intimate feel, while its traditional character fitted perfectly with the setting of Jessica and Tomer’s Lake District wedding.
Photographing a Wedding in the Lorton Valley
One of the biggest advantages of getting married at New House Farm is simply being in Lorton.
There is something wonderfully understated about this part of the Lake District. You have the mountains and lakes that people travel from all over the world to see, but the valley itself still feels peaceful and intimate.
For couples who want beautiful Lake District wedding photography without feeling like their wedding has to become an adventure expedition, it works particularly well. You can make the most of the farm and its grounds, head into the surrounding landscape for a few portraits, or simply stay close to the venue and let the day happen around you. So with the light being just right for portraits we hopped into the car and drove a short way down to some very picturesque views!
More portraits in the stunning lake district
Later in the day, Jessica and Tomer headed out into the valley for some portraits, with the mountains and a quiet lake providing an incredible Lake District backdrop.
As the sun began to dip behind the fells, the light became softer and warmer, creating that beautiful golden glow that is hard to beat. This is exactly the kind of moment where my relaxed and natural approach to wedding photography works best — rather than spending ages posing, I give couples a little space to walk, talk and enjoy being together while I capture what happens naturally.
For me, the best portraits are the ones where you can still see the connection between two people, rather than photographs that feel overly staged or forced.
Dancing in the Dying Light at New House Farm
Back at New House Farm, the celebrations carried on outside on the lawn as the last of the evening light started to fade.
There was so much fun and energy, with plenty of dancing, games, laughter and some seriously good music keeping everyone going. Jessica’s mum was particularly memorable, absolutely living it on the dance floor with some brilliant moves that had everyone smiling.
With the soft evening light, the beautiful surroundings and everyone completely caught up in the moment, it was one of those parts of the day where my relaxed, natural style really comes into its own — just letting things unfold and capturing all the joy as it happens.
